Why I think you should try Turkey & Marmaris this summer

When it comes to summer holidays, it’s no wonder that so many people are flocking to Turkey. There are several fun-filled, sunny resorts dotted all along the southern Turkish coast, bathed by the Mediterranean and Aegean Seas. These resorts bask in golden sunlight and soaring temperatures during the summer months, and with low prices to book, and low prices whilst you’re there, it’s no wonder more and more people are choosing to head east.

If you want to enjoy a holiday in cultural and bright surroundings, then Turkey & Marmaris is a great choice.

I’m sure you’ve heard of Marmaris, most people have, and most people have a bad outlook on it, but to be honest, most of these people have never been. I can talk quite honestly about Turkey Marmaris, and several other areas of Turkey because I live here, and no, I do not have a Turkish partner.

Most people assume that if you are a single girl living in Turkey, you must have a boyfriend of Turkish descent, but for me, this is simply not the case. I moved to Marmaris because I love the place, having visited for several years on holidays. Because of this, I am probably best placed to convince you of why you should be heading to this Turkey Marmaris gem.

Marmaris is within the Mugla province, and at only just under an hour’s drive away, it’s easy to explore this quite Turkish of cities. Mugla has better shopping than Marmaris, and I know this because whenever I get the urge for a spot of retail therapy, I jump on the bus!

Best time to go

Aside from the beautiful scenery around Marmaris, which you should certainly hire a car and get out and see, the town itself is pretty special itself. A huge, colourful bazaar is perfect for a spot of haggling, and if you can get the hang of it (believe me, it’s not hard), then you’ll not only come away with a few bargains, but you’ll probably spend half your time laughing at the antics and one-liners that the stall-holders come out with! Turkey is fake goods central however, so don’t expect to be finding much in the way of genuine designers, what you will find however is a plethora of ‘genuine fakes’!

If you love views, head to the castle.

Now, you need to find the damn thing first, and having lived here for two years, I have only just managed to figure out how to get to it – you can see it, but the pavement up to it is hard to find! It’s certainly worthwhile searching for however.

The marina is cosmopolitan and perfect for an evening’s stroll, and if you enjoy fish, or balik, then this is the part of town for you, with a huge range of fresh fish restaurants, catering for your every whim.

Of course, if you know anything about Marmaris then you will know that it is night-life central. Yes, it’s loud in parts, but you can avoid the loud parts if you so wish. There are more and more, what I call, ‘tinkly tinkly bars’ popping up, which is to mean restaurants which play more in the way of live music, or lounge music, and are less about dancing and more about food. This is great for those of you who want to sit and watch the world go by.

However, if you want to experience Turkish holiday resort night-life then you only have to walk down the beachfront a little and you will be hit with a neon-lit explosion of colour and noise, and this is where you will find cheaper drinks, and probably a lot more fun. Yes, you will be hassled to go in, but it’s playful banter; if you simply say ‘no thank you’, they will simply wish you a good holiday and move onto the next person behind you. The old hassle techniques of years gone by simply don’t happen anymore.

Once you’ve exhausted the beachfront options, head to Bar Street and party til the sun comes up. Of course, you could instead retire to your hotel room and have a sleep – Marmaris is varied like that, you can actually do whatever the hell you want.

Turkey Marmaris Beach

Now, I should mention the beach. Yes, Marmaris is a beach resort, but I personally think the next beach on, in Icmeler, is much nicer.  Marmaris beach is quite narrow, with gritty sand,  however Icmeler beach is totally sandy and wider, which is better if you’re travelling with kids.

You’ll find watersports all over the place, and in the summer the skies are littered with para-sailers trying not to collide with a mountain – believe me, they fly perilously close sometimes. If you prefer water-parks, then there are three to choose from, however Atlantis on the beach is always the best, in my opinion.

Turkey, Marmaris, and the love affair I have with both

Basically, Marmaris is the perfect choice for a summer holiday break away from it all, but if you want to explore something a little more Turkish, you only have to venture away from the main street and go back a street or two. A traditional Turkish restaurant is a must do, because not only will you get to try some authentic dishes (which are yummy), but you will also get plentiful for very little money indeed.

I could rave about Marmaris until the cows come home, but you have to try it for yourself to see what I mean. It is a love or hate kind of place, a little like Marmite, and if you fall in love with it, just like me, then you probably will never be free of it, and will want to go back time and time again.

Best time to go

I have often wondered myself whether they pump some kind of addictive substance into the air along Long Beach, which makes impressionable young girls like me want to keep returning, but to be honest, I think it’s just the place, and as far as homes go, this one is pretty damn special.  So if coming to Turkey, Marmaris may also be for you.
